Phase 01 Research . Surveillance Methods, Protocols, and Implications
Phase 01 seeks to unravel the complexities of surveillance in contemporary urbanism. The objectives of this phase of work is to:
1. Become familiar with the broad range of technologies, protocols, perceptions, and actors that have formed around sensing, monitoring, and acquisition of data within the built environment. 2. Establish relationships between the aforementioned elements to spatialize the implications of surveillance in the city of Berlin.
Working in small teams (2-3) you will develop a deep understanding of one of the following topics: 1. Topological and typological surveillance forms - Irmak Fermen, Huining Zhou 1. Panopticon 2. In this body of research it is imperative that the research aims to outline a broad subset of actors in an attempt to highlight the range of ways that surveillance unevenly affects communities based on class and race.
This body of research aims to produce a comprehensive body of work for the entire studio and should be framed as such, this means that you should be conscious of your biases to produce a body of work that allows for future studio phases to operationalize the research in multiple ways.
The deliverables for this phase of the research will be the following:
1. Abstract/Narrative, ~1500 words 2. Diagrams, Timelines, and mappings, specific to each research topic 3. PDF Publication, Crown Quarto format, 184mm x 242mm, based on template 4. Webpage(s) on the studio website, including links, videos, resources, etc. 5. Zotero Bibliography
